The Concept of the Microdot

Beyond its purely psychoactive use, microdots have also been used in espionage since the 20th century, and may still be used for this purpose today.

A microdot is a photographic image of text or a document (for example, an A4-sized page), reduced by a factor of 100 or more to the size of an ordinary typographic dot, approximately 0.8 mm in diameter.

Such a dot could be concealed in an innocent-looking letter, placed at the end of a sentence or disguised as a punctuation mark. Microdots were also hidden in books, magazines, or on postage stamps. Other hiding places included the rims of eyeglasses, watches, and clothing seams.

To read the message, the recipient simply had to detach the microdot (using a moistened needle, for example) and place it under an ordinary laboratory microscope.
